Nicola Carpenter was born in Northeast Minneapolis, Minnesota. She graduated from Perpich Arts High School in Visual Arts and is currently a BFA candidate at the University of Minnesota, planning to graduate spring 2013. She creates work spanning between different mediums and has recently been exploring themes of memory.
My work explores how people construct memory. I am interested in the many different ways in which people and the broader culture create personal and collective memories. I work in different mediums ranging from video to digital photography to sculpture to textiles. Living in an age of Internet technology and computer storage, memory is an interesting topic to explore. I want the viewer of my work to consider what it means to remember, and to think about topics such as simultaneity, collective memory, and the impact of technology.
